Algeria’s Minister of the Interior, Saïd Sayoud, announced on Monday the initiation of "in-depth investigations" into the deadly forest fires that affected the wilayas of Jijel, Bejaïa, and Tizi-Ouzou. This declaration shows the government's commitment to understanding the origins of the widespread blazes. This explanation noted the severe operational challenges faced by emergency services.

Official Response and Support

The recent fires, which erupted on Wednesday, August 26th, tragically resulted in 12 deaths. In addition to the fatalities, authorities confirmed that 54 people sustained injuries, requiring medical attention. While the exact number of injured individuals in the forest fires was not specified initially, the confirmed figure of 54 provides a clear picture of the human toll. In response to the devastating impact of these fires, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune previously decreed a national day of mourning. This official act of remembrance and solidarity reflects the profound sorrow felt across the nation for the victims and their families. The government's commitment to providing support to those affected was reiterated by Minister Saïd Sayoud, who emphasized the state's responsibility to ensure the best possible care for the injured and displaced families.

Challenges During Firefighting

The fires, which began on Wednesday, August 26th, posed significant challenges for emergency responders across the affected regions. Saïd Sayoud, Algeria’s Minister of the Interior, detailed the specific obstacles faced during firefighting operations, particularly concerning aerial support. Mr. Sayoud explained that "Les mauvaises conditions météorologiques, la hausse des températures, la force et l’intensité des vents ainsi que la grande concentration de fumée ont empêché la poursuite de la mobilisation des avions dans les opérations d’extinction." These adverse conditions, including high temperatures, strong winds, and dense smoke, severely hindered the deployment of water-bombing planes in certain affected areas, limiting their effectiveness in controlling the spread of the flames. Despite these considerable difficulties, Mr. Sayoud affirmed that "L’État algérien assurera la meilleure prise en charge des blessés et des familles sinistrées dans les plus brefs délais," ensuring that humanitarian efforts would continue. He also stated that "Les services de sécurité ouvriront des enquêtes approfondies afin de déterminer les causes du déclenchement de ces incendies, au regard de l’ampleur et du nombre des feux qui se sont déclarés dans plusieurs wilayas, pratiquement au même moment," indicating a thorough probe into potential causes.

Context of Previous Fires

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune previously decreed a national day of mourning in response to tragic fires, a measure that shows the recurring nature of such environmental disasters in Algeria. The country experienced an unprecedented wave of fires that lasted for 20 days, from July 8th to July 28th, just weeks prior to the latest incidents. During these earlier incidents, six deaths were reported across the affected regions, noting a consistent pattern of loss of life due to wildfires. Additionally, authorities confirmed the arrest of numerous individuals suspected of arson in connection with the July fires, suggesting that some of these blazes may have been deliberately set. These previous events show a recurring challenge faced by the country, prompting ongoing concerns about both natural and potentially human-induced factors contributing to the widespread destruction. The current investigations aim to shed light on the specific causes of the latest fires and address these persistent issues.
