The Environment Directorate of Ain Defla province initiated proactive operations to prevent flooding in anticipation of the winter season. Personnel from the directorate are working across the region to clear drainage systems and reinforce infrastructure in areas identified as high-risk. These measures aim to mitigate potential water damage as seasonal weather patterns approach. The work includes debris removal and site inspections within the municipalities of Boumedfaa, El Attaf, El Abadia, Khemis Miliana, and Bordj Emir Khaled. Teams from the National Sanitation Office and the Provincial Public Institution for Technical Landfill Management are assisting with the logistical requirements of these maintenance tasks. Authorities intend to finalize these protective efforts before the onset of heavy rainfall.

Broad Disaster Mitigation Strategy

Haifa Saba, the official in charge of the provincial Environment Directorate, stated that these operations are part of a broader program to mitigate natural disaster risks. This initiative relies on extensive coordination across multiple sectors to manage potential hazards effectively. Participating agencies include public works, the National Sanitation Office, forestry, irrigation, public equipment, the Provincial Public Institution for Technical Landfill Management, civil protection, municipalities, security, and the National Gendarmerie.

The collaborative framework ensures that each sector contributes specialized resources to the province-wide effort. Public works and irrigation departments are providing technical oversight for hydraulic infrastructure, while the National Gendarmerie and security forces assist in managing site access and traffic safety during the maintenance operations. Civil protection units remain on standby to provide emergency support as crews operate in difficult terrain.

Work crews are currently clearing waste and debris from wadi paths and rainwater drainage channels. These specific maintenance activities are underway in the municipalities of Boumedfaa, El Attaf, El Abadia, Khemis Miliana, and Bordj Emir Khaled. By removing obstructions from these natural and artificial watercourses, officials aim to ensure the unimpeded flow of runoff during the upcoming rainy season. These wadis, which often serve as primary drainage arteries for the province, require consistent clearing to prevent the accumulation of sediment and refuse that could otherwise cause water to divert into residential or commercial zones.

Beyond drainage maintenance, the program mandates the cleaning of urban and semi-urban areas to improve local sanitation and flood resilience. Maintenance teams are clearing roadsides, school surroundings, and public spaces of accumulated refuse. These efforts are designed to ensure that storm drains in populated centers remain unobstructed, preventing localized flooding that can disrupt daily life.

Efforts also extend to forested regions where workers are removing waste and discarded tires. Authorities identified these materials as significant fire hazards and believe their removal will reduce the risk of forest fires within the province. By eliminating flammable waste from wooded areas, the Environment Directorate aims to protect the local ecosystem while simultaneously reducing the volume of debris that could be washed into drainage systems during intense storm events. The integration of sanitation, waste management, and infrastructure protection forms the core of the strategy to enhance the overall safety of the province.
